Hillsborough, New Hampshire is located in Hillsborough County. It includes the following villages: Hillsborough Center, Hillsborough Upper Village, Emerald Lake Village and Bridge Village. Hillsborough is home to Fox State Forest, Gleason Falls, House Rock and part of Low State Forest. It is also home to many scenic roads, and five historic stone arch bridges Hillsborough was the birthplace of Franklin Pierce, the country’s 14th president. His childhood home, Pierce Homestead was built in 1804. The large house features period furniture, a ballroom, and a parlor. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house is now a museum and is open to the public. Another Hillsborough property listed on the National Register of Historic Places is the Governor Smith Mansion. This building is a late-Victorian house which today serves as a library and town office. The house contains Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles. Hillsborough Center – This has retained its character as a 19th New England town. It includes a public green, burial ground, school house, churches, horse sheds and a lost animal pond. The 18th century Meeting House is gone. However, many of the original homes remain. Hillsborough center is home to Gibson Pewter, where many pewter pieces are offered for sale. The Upper Village – The Upper Village is comprised of many 19th century houses and stores. The Lower Village – This served as a stopping point for stage coaches and included a toll house and gate. The Lower Village homes date back to the early 19th century. Hillsborough Bridge – This historic district is Hillsborough’s downtown. Many historic buildings and properties are found in this area. According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Hillsborough’s population at the time was 4,928 people. This included 1,922 households and 1,312 families. The average family size was 3.02 and the average household size was 2.55. Hillsborough is comprised of 43.6 square miles of land and one square mile of water.
