Steuben is a town in Washington County, Maine, United States. Upon incorporation in 1795 it was named after Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, the Inspector General of the U.S. Army during the Revolutionary War. According to the US census the town has a total area of 74.8 square miles, of which 43.0 square miles is land and 31.8 square miles, or 42.51% is water. As of the 2010 census, there were 1,131 people residing in the town, and according to the 2000 census there were 459 households, and 314 families residing in the town. The population density was 26.2 people per square mile. There were 775 housing units at an average density of 18.0 per square mile.
